Magnesium is a mineral that at least 68% of people are deficient in, since it affects 300 bodily functions, this is kind of a big deal.
Our diets, even when we eat well, can often lack it because, due to today’s farming practices and chemical treatment of crops, it is being depleted from even the real food sources we use.
Absorbed most efficiently through our skin (our skin absorbs everything we put on it, which is why we should be careful of what we put on it), magnesium ‘oil’ is a great way to get the magnesium your body needs.
While not actually an oil, it does feel like oil on the skin.
I have been using magnesium oil for a couple of years now, and have noticed when I use it before bed, I sleep better. This is one of the big effects I have heard from those who use it. I regularly apply it to my back and legs before bed.
Paired with good hydration during the day, I find I get much better quality of sleep, even if not great quantity (due to kids waking).
Another way I use it is for sore or crampy muscles and the pregnancy-induced restless leg issue. (Dr Axe has a great list of other ways it can help your body, including migraines, diabetes, painful PMS, and high blood pressure among others!)
It also helps bruises go away faster and can help with constipation.
It can also greatly improve mood and lessen anxiety.
It can tingle, or sting/itch a bit at first, if you are very deficient in it. It is best to start with a small patch. The feet are typically a good place to start.
Personally, it tingled the first few times I used it, and if I go a long time without using it I find it tingles until I have used it for a few days. It does sting if applied to cuts/boo-boos, so be careful. Also, do not apply to freshly shaved legs….yeah, personal experience talking here!
I have not tried it yet, but I have heard making lotion or body butter cuts down on the tingle.
Hubby uses it after he’s worked hard in the yard to prevent sore muscles (or, for sore muscles if he forgets).
Buying premade oil is pretty pricey, like $18/8oz. For around $11 I can make a whole quart!

- 1/2 cup Magnesium Chloride Flakes
- 1/2 cup boiling distilled water (I have used water filtered with our ZeroWater Filter before, and not had issues, but it improves shelf life to use distilled)
- Medium size sauce pot (even if you are just using 1/2 cup of each, when you add the magnesium it bubbles up pretty big)
- Bottle to store in (I make a bigger recipe-like quadruple it, so I use a quart sized mason jar to store the majority of it, then put some in a travel size little bottle to use everyday. I have tried a spray bottle and do not like it as much.)
Bring water to a boil, remove from heat and add flakes. Mix well until flakes are dissolved. Cool before storing.
For a bigger batch, just keep in mind that you should use a 1:1 ratio of water to magnesium flakes.
