Much has happened since I last posted (other than the scheduled linkups)!
My weekend of making more freezer meals was derailed by our new little guy joining our family.
D was born at 3: 19 am on his due date (the 5th). If you know me, you know how much stock I put in due dates. I really felt he was going to be late. After only 5 1/2 hours of labor (which is both good and bad!) his daddy got to catch him in our room. Yes. We had him at home. On purpose! I’ve gotten to say that to a few people and it blows their minds for some reason…
Unfortunately, at our first postpartum visit the next day, my blood pressure was extremely high, so I spent over 32 hours in the hospital for a 24 hour treatment and some monitoring. Thankfully my mom was here for the big kids and daddy brought D as a visitor so I could still nurse him.
Still not a fan of hospitals at all, but at least the nurses where pretty nice and at least curious if not supportive about homebirth (though most of them were supportive and desire to have their kids at home-which says a lot about hospital births…if the ones working them don’t want them….but anyway…). The fact that we were told five different things about when we could go home was frustrating. Another annoyance about hospitals. We did not have to deal with the one doctor I refuse to see at this hospital, so that was a blessing.
Missing all of that bonding time with the bigger kids was so tough. All I wanted to do was cry, but didn’t want to get my blood pressure any higher. Between the uncomfortable bed, the blood pressure cuff and nursing I only got a couple of 20 minute naps. With the treatment’s tendency to nauseate people, I was on a liquid diet (yeah, after giving birth and while trying to establish milk supply)…
Hospital policy was for another 24 hours of monitoring…and that would have been at 9 pm, and doctors don’t make rounds until 10ish am, so it would have been a lot longer… so after talking to the doctor we signed out AMA. She said she couldn’t officially say we were good to go since hospital policy said another 24 hours, but she felt we were making an informed decision for our family, knowing that being away from the kids and home was probably not helping and it wasn’t that we were signing out AMA against real objections since things looked pretty good.
As of right now I am on a medication for blood pressure, but I want to find a natural minded/knowledgeable doctor that I can work with to find a natural alternative to managing my blood pressure. My numbers have been low since we got home, so hopefully we can at least lessen the dose of the medication that I am on.
After a stop for chilli cheese fries and a milkshake (yeah, the whole eating healthier thing was out the window after more than 24 hours with real food all the while feeling like I could eat a whole cow! I really wanted a big burger, but there wasn’t a place with a decent gluten free bun open) we got home around 2.
It’s been pretty busy since then, but I have been trying to take it easy and rest when I can. I have several ideas for posts that I am itching to get out, but at the moment, I am drinking in all the newborn cuteness and enjoying time with the bigger Littles.
I may have a post up later this week, though my original thought was Thursday, not thinking about it being Thanksgiving here in the states, so it maybe Friday or Saturday before it’s out.
Hopefully next year I can do more of my Thanksgiving post ideas and recipes!
This year I am especially thankful to live in a state where homebirth is legal, for our new, healthy Little Guy, the two sweet ladies that brought us food and my family that has come up to help out.
What are you thankful for this year?
On to the linkup!
The Aprons & Pearls Link-up
“Love is always ready to deny itself, to give, sacrifice, just in the measure of its sincerity and intensity. Perfect love is perfect self-forgetfulness. Hence where there is love in a home, unselfishness is the law. Each forgets self and lives for others.
But where there is selfishness it mars joy. One selfish soul will destroy the sweetness of life in any home. It is like an ugly bush in the midst of a garden of flowers. It was selfishness that destroyed the first home and blighted all the loveliness of Paradise; and it has been blighting lovely things in earth’s home ever since. We need to guard against this spirit.”
